Volunteering

One of the biggest legacies of London 2012 will be in sports volunteering.

Some 70,000 volunteers will be needed to deliver a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. From spectator services such as ticket control and information points to medical and language services, volunteers will carry out essential tasks to ensure the Games run smoothly.

With competition for volunteering opportunities as fierce as the sporting competition itself, Medway Council hopes the volunteering spirit will spread wider than the 2012 Games themselves, and that includes right here in Medway.

Volunteering in Medway

Medway Council’s runs a programme of volunteer training and activities that you can get involved in right now.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our local sports clubs, and we can help put you in touch with clubs seeking volunteer support.

With the growth of Medway Park there are also opportunities to volunteer at major events such as the Modern Pentathlon World Cup.

Volunteers are also key to running community sporting events, such as the Medway Games and the annual Medway Mile.

Volunteers on Medway Council's Sports Volunteer Register, are notified about the latest opportunities. They can also access nationally-recognised, sports-related training courses.

To register, simply download a registration form (pdf 64KB). To use this file, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have it on your computer, please use our advice page.

For more information about volunteering contact the Sports Development Team on 01634 338761 or email sportsdevteam@medway.gov.uk.

How to register as a 2012 volunteer

London 2012 organisers LOCOG (the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games) has begun recruiting its army of volunteers to delivery the 2012 Games.

The volunteers, known as Games Makers, will be a mixture of specialist and generalists.

  • Specialist volunteers will already have the specific skills or qualifications that are needed for their role – for example, sport or medical training or experience of working with a particular sport.

All volunteers will be expected to attend training events that will give them the knowledge they need to carry out their roles.

Pre-identified applicants for specialist roles can apply from 27 July 2010 onwards. Applications for generalist roles open on 15 September 2010 and will run until late October.

For information on volunteering roles and the application process, please visit www.london2012.com/volunteering.

Personal Best

Personal Best is a volunteering qualification with the London 2012 Inspire Mark that is available in Medway.

The programme is a chance to learn new skills, gain a Level 1 qualification and get support looking for jobs. You will also have the opportunity to volunteer at local sporting, cultural and community events.

It is open to people who are not in work or education but would like to gain opportunities to volunteer in their community and at the same time improve their skills and chances of getting a job.

Each Personal Best graduate will have an opportunity to become a London 2012 Games volunteer.

The 10-week programme is run by the Shaw Trust. For more information, call 01227 795190 or email stepping-stones@shaw-trust.org.uk.
