Hands Rochester Volunteer Bureau
Hands Rochester Volunteer Bureau (www.handsrochestervolunteerbureau.co.uk/)
was established in 1969. It covers the large urban/rural areas of
Rochester and Chatham and has been a volunteer centre since 1982.
Its office opening hours are from 9.30am to 12.30pm,
Monday-Friday.
The bureau manages the following schemes and projects:
Transport scheme
Its transport scheme is for use by anyone aged 75 years and
older who is unable to use public transport due to mobility
problems, or who does not have a friend or relative to provide
transport. Those people aged less than 75 years may also be able to
use the service if they are registered disabled or have a serious
health problem which limits their mobility. The scheme enables
people to attend essential appointments at hospitals, GPs/clinics,
or other important medical appointments.
Befriending/Visiting scheme
Volunteers give up an hour or two of their time, once or twice a
week, to visit an elderly person in their own home to provide
companionship and a listening ear.
Lunch Club
The Lunch Club meets once a fortnight and operates a waiting
list (Walderslade and Lordswood area only).
Seeking volunteers for Hands' Board of Trustees
Join a team which participates in the decision-making process of
the bureau. You should be able to commit to attendance at evening
committee meetings held on the third Wednesday of the month. You
should be enthusiastic, self-driven and have an interest in
furthering the aims of the bureau. All committee members are
expected to work within Hands' Equal Opportunity framework.
Recruitment of volunteers
In its role as a volunteer centre it recruits volunteers on
behalf of charitable, voluntary and statutory bodies (for
charitable and not for profit organisations). Volunteering is open
to all and it assists people aged 18 years and older to find
suitable and rewarding volunteering work.
Supported volunteers
The scheme has been developed to help, for example, people who
may have a mental health issue or learning difficulties.
