Business rates
Business rates bills
The business rate collected by Medway Council is paid into a
national pool and the money is distributed back to local councils.
The amount that each council receives depends on the number of
people living in the area. The non-domestic rates bill calculator
2010-15 gives you an estimate of your annual bill.
Rateable value
A business property has a rateable value based on its rental
value that is set by the Valuation Office Agency (an independent
government agency). Business rate bills are calculated by
multiplying the rateable value of a property by the national
multiplier that is set each year by central government. You can
check your business rate balance and
pay business rates online.
A copy of the local rating list, showing all rateable values,
can be seen at Medway Council’s Revenues and Benefits Service
office. Copies are also available at the Valuation Office Agency
website (www.voa.gov.uk) or at
the address below.
Owners, leaseholders or occupiers of business properties who
think that their rateable value is wrong can appeal to:

The national multiplier is set each year by the government. The
