Fair Trader Scheme: information for businesses
The Medway Fair Trader Scheme is operated by Medway Trading
Standards Service and helps businesses comply with the law and
improve consumer protection. It operates within Medway for
businesses that are based there. They can become members provided
they meet the terms and conditions of the scheme. You can search
the database of
businesses already on the scheme.
Benefits for businesses
The scheme:
- promotes the company as a Fair Trader business with its
name on the Medway Fair Trader Scheme list and on the business
directory with a link to the company website;
- offers potential for increased business, with consumers
encouraged to use local traders;
- gives independent recognition of a business by Medway Trading
Standards;
- provides a Medway Fair Trader Scheme membership certificate and
logo to use for display and marketing;
- offers pre-entry vetting to make sure a business meets the
scheme’s high standards.
Medway Fair Trader Scheme members will be able to establish a
relationship with the Trading Standards Service based on
co-operation rather than enforcement. All member businesses will
have a named contact in Trading Standards and can obtain
information on consumer civil law and legislation enforced by the
Service. In addition, Trading Standards will assist members with
staff training where resources permit.
This scheme is a positive move to improve the way in which
traders deal with customers. By becoming a Medway Fair Trader you
will be able to show your customers that you have been accredited
by Medway Trading Standards. The scheme aims to give consumers
peace of mind when choosing a business by providing a list of
reputable companies which they can use.

Membership fees
The annual charge for membership of the Medway Fair Trader
Scheme is £153.80, which is subject to review.
