Petrol stations
Medway Council's Trading Standards Team has a duty to enforce
the petroleum licensing conditions at petrol filling stations in
Medway. The aim is the safe passage of petroleum spirit through the
site from the time the tanker arrives on site to deliver the
product to the time that the product is safely dispensed to the
customer at the pumps.
The conditions specify that the tanker parks safely, delivers to
the site’s tanks without fire, explosion or spillage and leaves the
site safely. While the fuel is stored at the filling station, the
site is monitored to detect any leakage from the tanks, pumps and
pipework between the two.
When it is dispensed from the pumps, its safe delivery is
achieved by customers following printed instructions near the pumps
or through the supervision of trained staff.
Trading Standards also has a duty to see that pumps give a fair
measure, as required by the weights and measures legislation. This
is done by testing and sealing each pump before it is put into
use.
