Project SUITE
Project
SUITE (Social and Urban Inclusion Through Housing) is a
European knowledge exchange network funded by the URBACT II
Programme.
The network's objectives are to optimise a sustainable and
affordable supply of suitable housing and promote social cohesion
through partnership and co-operation.
Working for social and urban integration means implementing
housing policies that guarantee not only affordable housing but
sustainable housing of good quality. This promotes social
inclusion and the integration of neighbourhoods and
housing in cities.
Project SUITE partners
Project SUITE brings Medway together with eight European
locations:
- Krakow, Poland;
- Tallinn, Estonia;
- Santiago de Compostela, Spain;
- Newcastle, United Kingdom;
- Nantes, France;
- The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany;
- Rennes, France;
- Iasi, Romania.
The common objective of SUITE partners is to make decisive steps
forward in developing higher levels of sustainable housing
provision, considering both the social and environmental
perspectives.
By combining both perspectives, SUITE aims to improve
the ability of local authorities to direct dynamic
developments in urban policy to meet economic, social,
ecological and demographic challenges.
This higher level of policy will be based on the broad
involvement of different local actors, using open methods of
co-operation and participation and substantial responsiveness
to the needs of different social groups.
The main challenges
These issues bring up a major social challenge, namely the
inequality of access to housing. The challenge facing the public
authorities is part of a wider problem of urban and social
exclusion.
Working for social and urban integration means implementing
housing policies that guarantee housing that is not only affordable
but also of good quality and sustainable. This promotes the social
inclusion of the population and the urban integration of
neighbourhoods and housing in cities.
Key actions
The methods chosen to deal with all expectations and
contributions from partners and the feedback process
at the Local Action Plan level are based on a triangle of
thematic work (co-ordinated by thematic working groups, integrating
thematic meetings and a local-international process of mutual
enrichment), culminating with a synergy level at the top.
Network action will be arranged through three working
groups:
- Working group 1 - qualitative social housing
combined with social mix: the role of public authorities;
- Working group 2 - high environmental quality
housing for the larger population and for a reasonable price: from
experimentation to mainstream;
- Working group 3 - developing housing of good
social and environmental quality within a restricted public budget:
partnerships and priorities.
