Council’s Cabinet approved the appointment of leading UK
construction group Morgan Sindall (www.morgansindall.com/) to
build the new Chatham bus station.
The attractive, landscaped station – due for completion soon -
will use GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technology to track the
progress of buses and feed customers up-to-the-minute arrival and
departure times on digital display boards. It will replace the
inadequate and outdated bus station inside The Pentagon shopping
centre.
The bus station is being paid for from the funds that Medway
receives from the Homes and Communities Agency as a key part of the
Thames Gateway regeneration area.
The new bus station (to be used by all local bus operators) will
have 19 stops including six on Waterfront Way, the new ground-level
bus, and the taxi and cycle route that follows the route of the
demolished Sir John Hawkins Way flyover.
There will be a travel information and ticketing centre with
public toilets and vending machines for refreshments. The bus
station canopies will each have a living green sedum roof creating
an attractive view from high points such as Fort Amherst.
Waiting areas beneath the canopy roofs will be protected from
the weather by tall glass screens. The White House in Riverside
Gardens will be refurbished as a base for drivers and office space
for bus station managers.
Part of Globe Lane car park has been closed to accommodate
the contractor’s site compound and the construction works. Access
to the remaining spaces is from Medway Street only.
Update 15 July 2011 - there will be resurfacing
work on the Brook between Globe Lane and the old police
station access from 25 to 29 July. To minimise
traffic disruption we plan to do this overnight - between 8 pm and
6 am.

In order to manage the traffic safely, this section of
the Brook will be narrowed to one lane only and Whiffens
Avenue closed to traffic during these times. A signed
diversion route avoiding Whiffens Avenue will be in place via the
Brook, Slicketts Hill, Cross Street and Rope Walk.
Spaces lost at Globe Lane have been compensated for by the
re-opening of the 150-space Sir John Hawkins Car Park, off
Waterfront Way, with an entrance on the corner of Best Street,
outside St John's Church.
