Diamond Jubilee Licensing Hour

Changes in opening hours

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is an extended weekend for a national celebration starting on Saturday 2 June 2012, Sunday 3 June 2012, Monday 4 June 2012 is Bank Holiday and Tuesday 5 June 2012 is Bank Holiday.

An Order detailing the extension of licensing hours for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee was made on 9 March 2012 and came into force on 16 March 2012. The Order relaxes licensing hours on two consecutive days during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebration.

It extends licensed premises' opening hours (to the extent that this is not already the case) for the period of hours beginning:

  • 11pm on Friday, 1 June and ending at 1am on Saturday, 2 June 2012; and
  • 11pm on Saturday, 2 June and ending at 1am on Sunday, 3 June 2012.

Terms and conditions

Operators should note the Order only applies to Premises Licences and Club Premises Certificates which currently authorise licensable activities to be carried on up to or after 11pm on each of the days and only licensable activities already on the licence or certificate may be extended.

The Order does not add any regulated entertainment where this is not permitted at 11 pm by the licence or certificate. The provisions of the Order are similar to those made for the Royal Wedding in 2011, and are restricted to 'on sales' of alcohol.

Additionally it permits premises to be used for the provision of late night refreshment at the specified times only if the premises may also be used for the sale or supply of alcohol for consumption on the premises.

This order does not apply to the sale by retail of alcohol for consumption off the premises or for late night refreshment (takeaways) where alcohol is not authorised by the licence. Operators hoping to make the most of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations may wish to consider the use of a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) to provide entertainment which is not already covered by their existing premises licence, or even if covered, to extend the two days subject to the Order, or the Sunday, Bank Holiday Monday or Tuesday.
