Gillingham Waterfront

Artist's impression of the entrance to Pier Road development in GillinghamThe council adopted a planning brief to guide development of the Gillingham Waterfront site in July 2004 for this 10 hectare (20 acre) site with the potential to deliver a mix of commercial and residential development in a key location close to the Medway Tunnel on the northern bypass.

The area includes the former Akzo Nobel site and Gillingham Pier and stretches from Chatham Dockyard east to Danes Hill. It incorporates both public and private water-based leisure facilities, vacant former industrial sites, housing and commercial uses. It is close to the densely populated North Gillingham area and lies between the river and the Gillingham North Relief Road

The waterfront area provides an opportunity for mixed-use developments, marine activities and increased public access to the river. It can also play a role in improving the environment, significantly, raising the quality of development and contributing to the provision of community services in the area. An approved development brief (pdf 3,080KB) covers the area between Chatham Dock and Gillingham Marina.
