Medway Carers' Strategy 2009-14

Medway Council and NHS Medway value carers and the contribution that they make to the community. Carers enable vulnerable people to stay in the community and lead independent lives. It hopes this document will lead to an appropriate framework of support and care for carers in Medway.

This is a lead document for Medway Council and NHS Medway about how it wants to support and work with carers. It is a strategy that is complemented by the Young Carers’ Strategy, which talks about the specific needs of this vulnerable group.

As part of developing this strategy a number of focused interviews have been undertaken with carers to understand their needs and challenges so that they are reflected as key themes for development.

Medway Council and NHS Medway are keen to commission services viewed as most important by carers. It is therefore essential that the people that use carers’ services have the opportunity to inform the range and shape of those services. This means that partners must prioritise where the budget should be focused to deliver excellent outcomes and secure best value. The challenge for our organisations is to ensure that a strong and effective partnership is established so that we commission in a person centred way.

Medway Council and NHS Medway are particularly grateful to carers who have taken the time to contribute to this strategy by responding to the Carers’ Centre’s ideas tree; attending the consultation event; and/or taking part in a focused interview. Without these contributions, the strategy would lack heart and focus.
