Stay connected this Christmas

Christmas should be a happy time as we celebrate the final holiday for the year. It’s also a time when a helping hand can make a real difference.

Why not do a feel-good thing this Christmas? – great ways to be a good neighbour and help someone who may not have friends or family nearby over the festive season.

Here are some of our top tips for having a feel-good Christmas, including some of our, A Better Medway services. Great ways to get out and meet new people:

  • Invite a lonely neighbour round for a festive lunch – a cracking way to make new friendships
  • Want to help give back to the community at Christmas? Help out with hospital trips and outings as a volunteer driver this festive season. Visit whocares (for Hoo Peninsula), waltcic  (Walderslade) or Gillinghamvolunteercentre (across Medway) to apply
  • Got some spare Christmas cards to use? Give a card to a new neighbour – a great way to stay connected
  • Wrap up and walk – @medwaywalkinggroups health walks are running throughout winter. A great way to meet new people and get some festive fresh-air.  Sign up here
  • It can be harder to make new friends as you get older? – our ‘Staying Connected’ booklet is packed full of services and support groups across Medway. Check it out – it could help create a feel-good future
  • Need something to do with the kids? Why not bake these chocolate cherry popcorn cakes - there’s few ingredients involved and they’re a healthy alternative to chocolate rice crispy cakes.  You could take some round to someone in your neighbourhood this Christmas
  •  Tools and tea at the ready – the Medway ‘Men in Sheds’ project gives men over 25 (not currently working) and retired men the chance to work together on community projects, or just meet up for a chat (and not forgetting a warm cuppa). Don’t feel alone this Christmas – the ‘Mental Health Matters’ hotline is available 24/7 over Christmas and New Year. Calls are free – contact 0300 330 5486. We’re here to listen.  More @ mental_health.
