30 Hours Free Childcare

30 Hours of Free Childcare for 3 and 4 year olds

Every three and four year old is entitled to 15 hours of free early education universal childcare. Certain Medway families can receive free education for their children aged three and four years for 30 hours each week. This could be a place in a pre-school, nursery or with a registered childminder.

Don't miss out on free childcare and the opportunity for your child/ren to benefit from gaining important skills such as learning how to mix with other children, experimenting and exploring, under the professional guidance and support of qualified staff. These skills are a real benefit in preparing children for when then they start school.

Who can apply?

You can usually get the 30 hours of free childcare if you (and your partner) are:

  • in work - or getting parental leave, sick leave or annual leave
  • each earning at least the National Minimum Wage or Living Wage for 16 hours a week (this is £120 if you are over 25)

You can get 30 hours free childcare at the same time as claiming Universal Credit, tax credits or childcare vouchers

You will not be eligible if:

  • your child doesn't usually live with you
  • the child is your foster child
  • you or your partner has a taxable income over £100,000

More information is available on the Governments Childcare Support website. If you’re eligible for the extra hours, you should sign up online and get your personal code. You will need to give this code to your childcare provider to reserve your place. You’ll get the extra hours once the next term starts.

How to apply

You can check if you are eligible for 30 hours free childcare online at Childcare Choices. If you are eligible you will be issued a code. Once you have selected who you would like to provide your childcare you will need to give them your code.  The childcare provider needs this code in order to confirm your free 30 hours of childcare.

If you have a code already you should reconfirm your details

If you are already registered for free childcare you will need to go online and sign in to your account and confirm your details are up-to-date every three months. So if you already have a code go online now.
