Help from Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapy Service can offer help to Medway residents who have a permanent and substantial disability. Assessment and advice may be offered where an individual may be experiencing problems, include the following:

  • getting in and out of their property to reach the public highway
  • access to essential facilities within their property
  • the ability to use the toilet
  • the ability to get up or out of a bed or chair
  • the ability to prepare a hot drink and essential food
  • the functional ability to maintain personal hygiene

The Occupational Therapy Service will undertake the assessment within the individuals home and will be able to recommend the provision of equipment and adaptations such as rails, specialist equipment or adaptations necessary to enable individual to become independent. Where major adaptations are required, the Occupational Therapist will make recommendations for a Disabled Facilities Grant (which is subject to a financial assessment) and assist the individual through the process.

Examples of recommendations may include:

  • vertical lifts;
  • level access shower facilities or specialist bathing equipment;
  • ground floor toilet;
  • wheelchair access within the home (such as widening doorways);
  • lowering kitchen surfaces to wheelchair height;
  • ground floor extensions to provide essential facilities;
  • ramping to provide wheelchair access to and from the property.
