Removal of bodies out of England and Wales
When it is intended to remove the body of a deceased person out
of England and Wales it is necessary to give notice of this
intention to the coroner within whose
jurisdiction the body is lying.
The registrar will not issue the green form (certificate for
burial and cremation) in these circumstances.
Funeral directors often give notice to the coroner on behalf of
the person making the arrangements. If necessary the registrar is
able to supply the form needed on which to give notice to the
coroner.
Some countries require a cadaver certificate before allowing a
body into the country for burial. The certificate is issued by the
environmental health officer for the council of the area where the
death occurred or from where the body is to be exhumed and it
confirms that no epidemic of infectious disease occurred in the
borough for three months preceding the death. Although anyone can
apply for the certificate, the matter is normally dealt with by the
funeral directors.
