Smoking
Smoking is the United Kingdom’s single greatest cause of
preventable illness and early death. More than 120,000 people a
year in the United Kingdom die from smoking. Currently about
13million adults in this country smoke.
British people smoke more cigarettes per person than the
European average and a higher proportion of deaths are caused by
smoking in the United Kingdom than in any other country. Passive
smoking kills hundreds of people every year and causes misery for
many. Smoking costs the National Health Service (NHS) up to £1.7
billion each year.
Advice on the effects of smoking and how to give it up can be
found at NHS Smokefree.
At today’s rates, a 20-per-day smoker will spend more than
£37,000 over the next 20 years on cigarettes. Use the NHS Cost of
Smoking Calculator to estimate how much money you could save if
you gave up smoking.
Giving up smoking is one of the single most beneficial things
you can do for your immediate and long term health. Unfortunately,
the insidious nature of nicotine addiction also makes giving up
smoking one of the hardest things to do.
Remember - England went smoke-free on 1 July 2007. It
is now illegal to smoke in public places.
