The Council Tax charge
Where the money is spent
Council tax helps to pay for the services provided by Medway
Council, the Kent Police Authority and Kent and Medway Fire and
Rescue Authority. In a parish, council tax will also include a
charge for the parish council.
Percentage of council tax paid to each authority (excludes
parish charges):
- Medway Council - 84.4 per cent
- Kent Police Authority - 10.5 per cent
- Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority - 5.1 per cent
The 84.4 per cent allocated to Medway Council amounts to almost
£96million and contributes to the £625million the council spends on
the following services:
- Services for children - 44.6 per cent
- Housing (including benefit payments) - 19.3 per cent
- Adult services - 14.8 per cent
- Services for the environment - 8.7 per cent
- Leisure and cultural services - 3.7 per cent
- Other council services - 8.9 per cent
Where the money comes from
The main sources of income to the council are as follows:
- Government grants - 68.8 per cent
- Fees and charges for services - 15 per cent
- Council tax - 15.6 per cent
- Use of reserves - 0.6 per cent
How the council tax is worked out
The total amount to be met from council tax is calculated and
then divided by the number of properties in Medway. The result is
the amount payable for a band D property. A figure is then
calculated for each of the eight bands (A-H) shown on the right, in
accordance with the fractions of the band D figure set out in
council tax legislation. Each domestic property is allocated to one
of these eight bands. The band is based on the market value of the
property as at 1 April 1991. The banding is determined by a
government agency, the Valuation Office Agency and any
disputes over the banding of a property should be directed to the
Valuation Office Agency not the council.
