Guide to Local Elections 2011
Medway decides
There are elections in each of the 22 wards and 11 parishes in
Medway on Thursday, 5 May 2011.
Your vote will determine not only who will be representing your
area in the council chamber but also which political party or
parties - should the result prove inconclusive - takes
charge.
They, in turn, will be setting the agenda for the next four
years making decisions on issues that will affect you if you
live or work in Medway - from bin collections and recycling to
social services and the area's regeneration.
This guide aims to give you the basic information on the process
in the lead up to the election, the day of the count itself and
what happens afterwards with links to further information held on
this site and elsewhere.
We have also posted some additional
information explaining the choices you have on the referendum
taking place the same day on the proposed reform of the national
voting system for parliamentary elections.
The build up
By now you should have received your polling card with
details of where you will go to vote come 5 May.

As of 1 March 2011 there were 189,843 registered electors in
Medway. The deadline for register to vote or apply to
vote by post passed on Thursday, 14 April
Postal votes went out to those who requested them on Monday, 18
April. If you do not receive it, spoil it or lose it you can apply
for a replacement at Gun Wharf from Wednesday 27 April
2011.
We will need your request in writing and you will be
required to provide us with identification before we are able
to re-issue you with replacement ballot papers.

elections and one for the referendum on use of the Alternative
Vote system at future Westminster elections.
For those of you living in areas where parish council elections
are taking place you will have an additional ballot paper
to fill in.
Your polling card will have the details of where you will
need to go to vote. A full list of polling stations in
Medway is also available on our elections page. You do not need to take your
polling card to the polling station to vote.
Election Night
211 candidates are contesting the Medway Council elections with
108 people seeking election to parish councils.
Once polls close at 10pm the sealed ballot boxes will be taken
to the election count at Medway Park, Gillingham.
A team of staff will count these ballot papers as well
as the more than 30,000 postal votes that are
expected.
We will be offering a full results service through the
night publishing the outcome of elections in all wards
here on this website as well as on Twitter at www.twitter.com/medway_council
Referendum ballot papers will start to be counted from 4pm on
Friday, 6 May. The result for Medway will be sent to the Regional
Counting Officer in Southampton and then a regional and national
result will be declared
The new council
Existing councillors will remain in post for four days until
winning candidates are officially sworn in. The new mayor
and executive cabinet will be chosen at the council's annual
meeting towards the end of May.
