Information for candidates
The Electoral Commission (www.electoralcommission.gov.uk/)
has detailed information about standing as a candidate.
The next scheduled elections for Medway Council are in May
2011.
If you wish to stand as a candidate within Medway, please
contact the Elections Office using the contact details at the
bottom of this page. A nomination pack will be available to you
prior to the election. The pack consists of:
- Nomination Paper,
- Consent to Nomination,
- Appointment of Election Agent,
- Electoral Register request form,
- Timetable,
- Expense Forms,
- Copy of Guidance Notes.
If you are a candidate for a registered political party, you
will also need to submit to the Elections Office:
- Certificate of Authorisation,
- Request to use the Party Emblem.
After your nomination has been accepted by the Returning
Officer, you will be sent a Validity Letter confirming your
nomination. If a candidate later decides to withdraw their
nomination, they should inform the Elections Office and send the
Returning Officer a signed letter withdrawing their nomination.
Nomination Paper
At council elections, each candidate must submit to the
Elections Office their completed nomination papers before the date
given on the Notice of Election. It requires 10 signatories – a
proposer, a seconder and eight assentors who must all be local
government electors within the ward.
Consent to Nomination
A nomination is not a valid nomination unless the candidate
submits a Consent to Nomination. They must sign this declaration
stating that they are qualified to stand as a candidate. The
consent must be attested by a witness.
Appointment of Election Agent
If you wish to appoint another person to act as your Agent, you
must complete their details on an Appointment of Election Agent
form. If no applications are received, the Candidate will
automatically be deemed to be acting as their own agent.
