What the council aims to do
Providing high-quality, value for money services is central to
the council’s work. Managing its finances well is essential to
achieving that, as well as ensuring that council tax levels remain
among the lowest in the country.
The council meets these aims by continuing to:
- attract external funds to support its priorities;
- monitor finances and move resources into high priority areas as
part of the budget process;
- be involved with partnership working with other public
services;
- reduce costs where possible;
- improve procurement;
- sell its own services externally where appropriate.
The Audit Commission (www.audit-commission.gov.uk/)
has judged that the council provides good value for money for most
services – awarding it a rating of three out of a maximum of
four.
The Business Support Department has responsibility for ensuring
that the finances of the council are properly administered. This
responsibility includes the provision of:
- financial planning and management;
- exchequer and payroll services;
- insurance and risk management;
- internal audit.
The department also undertakes the collection of council tax, the payment of benefit and the collection of national non-domestic rates.
Medway Council publishes details of all
spending over £500. You can find this on the open data page.
