Council tax reductions for apprentices and youth trainees

When counting the number of adults in a household for the purpose of council tax some people, including apprentices and youth trainees, can be disregarded.

If the number of adult residents who are not disregarded is either one or none a discount may apply.

Apprentices must be:

  • Employed to learn a trade, business, profession, office, employment or vocation and
  • Undertaking a programme of training leading to a qualification accredited by the National Council for Vocation Qualification or the Scottish Vocational Education Council and
  • Employed with a salary or allowance substantially less than you would receive once qualified. The salary can be no more than £196 per week.

Youth trainees must be:

  • Under 25 and
  • Have a youth training arrangement
