Council Tax Reduction change

Changes to Council Tax Reduction

We want to hear your views on proposed changes to the scheme that helps people on low incomes with payment of their council tax.

The consultation has started but there is plenty of time to tell us what you think. Find out more and complete a survey online. Paper copies are available at your nearest library or community hub. The consultation closes at 5pm on Monday, 6 November 2017.

Since April 2013, it has been the responsibility of Medway Council to set its own local scheme for Council Tax Reduction. In recent years there have been many welfare reforms announced by the government and we are considering whether we should integrate these national reforms into our local scheme.

We need your help to decide how to do this when delivering next year’s Council Tax Reduction Scheme.

These parts of the scheme are involved:

  • Backdating  claims
  • The family premium
  • Temporary absences
  • The number of children who can be included in a claim
  • Employment Support Allowance components
  • The Severe Disability Premium
  • Bereavement Support payments
  • Introducing a De-minimis limit

Your views will be considered and the results of this consultation will be available to view in December 2017.
