GCSE English
MACLS offers three GCSE English evening
courses. GCSE English is a key qualification recognised by many
employers. It is a requirement for entry for a number of careers
such as teaching, nursing and for further and higher education
courses. This one-year course develops learners’ skills in both
written and spoken English and their reading of everyday English
texts.
This one-year course aims to take learners to
the AQA (new specification) GCSE English qualification, Grade C or
above.
Please note this course is aimed at adult learners. If you
are 16 to 18 years of age or still at school or college, you will
not be able to enrol for this course. You will need to talk to
other providers in the area offering this qualification.
Initial assessment for GCSE English
This course is demanding and regular
attendance is VITAL. You will need to be able to write in sentences
and paragraphs and to have a command of vocabulary and punctuation
to allow you to develop subjects in your writing to 500+ words. For
this reason, there is a pre-course written assessment for all
prospective learners.
For further information about the pre-course
assessment, course content and fees, please read the appropriate
course information sheet carefully.
GCSE Mathematics

MACLS offers GCSE mathematics courses at the
Rochester Centre in the evening and daytime. Many people find this
a necessary qualification for entry to their chosen occupation. It
will also help to further their education and career and help them
help their children through their education. On the other hand, you
might take it simply to build your confidence and self-esteem.
This one-year course aims to take learners to
the Edexel (linear) qualification. Most learners will take the
Higher Tier exam with available grades D – A*. However, some
learners may opt to take the exam at Foundation Tier, with a top
grade available of C.
Please note this course is aimed at adult
learners. If you are 16-18 years of age or still at school or
college, you will not be able to enrol for this course. You
will need to talk to other providers in the area offering this
qualification.
Initial assessment for GCSE mathematics
This course is demanding and assumes a good
level of basic numeracy to start the course. For this reason,
there is a pre-course written assessment for all prospective
learners.
For further information about the pre-course
assessment, course content and fees, please read the appropriate
course information sheet carefully.
GCSE Science
GCSE human health and physiology is a popular choice for
learners, both for general interest and because of their relevance
for employment. It is particularly suited to post-school learners
in an adult learning environment.
Time commitment for GCSE courses
As MACLS' GCSE courses are planned over one year, they are
inevitably fairly intensive. Learners will need prior knowledge in
some areas and adequate literacy and numeracy skills to enable them
to complete the assigned tasks as their course proceeds. You will
need to be able to make time available for reading, homework and
study outside the classes themselves throughout the course.
