Things to do

Medway is an area with something for everyone.
There are leisure facilities for all ages, ranging from the
latest sports attractions to country
parks. The council also runs a number of leisure centres in Medway.
The area is well known for its rich heritage. The Romans and
Normans each left their mark and the area also has a long seafaring
tradition. Rochester Castle and Cathedral and the Historic Dockyard Chatham are just some of the
great landmarks.
Charles Dickens grew up in Chatham
and Rochester. Many of Dickens’ books feature places and buildings
in Medway.
Shoppers are well catered for in Medway. As well as local shopping centres, the area has larger
shopping centres at the Pentagon Centre (www.pentagonshoppingcentre.co.uk)
in Chatham, Hempstead Valley (www.hempsteadvalley.com/home)
in Gillingham and the Dockside Outlet Centre (www.docksideshopping.co.uk)
at Chatham Maritime.
Contemporary art exhibitions showing
local, national and international artists can be found throughout
Medway. The exhibitions can be thought-provoking and challenging.
Theatres in the area provide a mixed
programme of professional and amateur productions.
The council’s libraries combine the
latest technology with a strong focus on customer service.
