What Medway Council does

As a unitary authority, Medway Council provides all local
government services for a quarter of a million people in Medway.
The council delivers services working in partnership with private,
public and voluntary sectors.
The council looks after public
transport, housing, learning, planning and much more: everything from frontline services, such as refuse collection, to work that goes on behind
the scenes to ensure that services in Medway run smoothly and
cost-effectively.
The council’s regeneration team, Medway
Renaissance, is leading the regeneration of key sites like
Rochester Riverside, Chatham Centre and Waterfront, and Gillingham
Waterfront.
The people who make decisions are councillors. They are elected
by the people of Medway and usually represent political groups. The
council is made up of 55 councillors from 22 wards throughout
Medway. You can find out who your councillor is by visiting the
councillors'
pages.
The council’s
cabinet makes most member-level decisions in line with the
overall policies and budget of the council. This includes strategic
matters, such as leading on the regeneration of Medway and also
operational matters, such as determining parking issues in local
areas.
The cabinet is made up of 10 elected members from the
Conservative Group, as this group has overall control of the
council. These members are known as portfolio holders and are responsible for
different areas of the council.
