International opportunities

Intercultural understanding and community cohesion

The council offers a wide variety of projects and resources to support schools in developing the Intercultural Understanding Strand of the Key Stage 2 framework for languages. These can also be used to support community cohesion and to develop the international dimension across the whole school curriculum.

These resources are constantly changing and evolving so please contact primlang@medway.gov.uk for the most up-to-date information.

International schools award

This accreditation scheme supports the development of the international dimension and is available at three levels:

  • foundation;
  • intermediate;
  • full award.

The council can direct schools to previous recipients of the award who can help with the application process. Regular information evenings are held linked to the Our Medway project twilights.

Teachers’ international professional development

These study visits take place during school holidays for teachers with more than two years experience. Every Local Authority (LA) has a yearly allocation of places. Medway has 11 to 13 each year. The theme of the visit is chosen by the LA in accordance with the Department for Educations' high priority list and local need.

Comenius in-service continuing professional development (CPD)

Funding for CPD or job shadowing in 30 European Countries is available via the British Council (www.britishcouncil.org/comenius.htm).

School and area linking visits

Grants are available to visit schools as part of LA lead collaborative projects. This involves a commitment to a long-term area link and to collaborative working with other local schools.

Connecting classrooms

Grants are available to groups of eight or more schools to enable them to meet and plan with international partners and organise CPD in situ on shared themes.

Joint curriculum projects

Grants are available for two to three terms to work on a collaborative project with schools in France, China or Japan.

Comenius school partnerships

Schools and organisations across Europe can apply for funding to work on collaborative projects to enhance learning and develop life skills.

E-languages

This is the global online platform for teachers to share ideas and work together with their students on curriculum relevant projects. It is available in 23 languages

E-Twinning

This is the online community and collaboration tool for schools in 32 European countries. Find partners, develop projects and get accreditation.

Medway Council Twinning links

The council is twinned with several countries and funding and support for projects with these countries can be accessed through the International Relations Committee.

A town in France

Grants are available to schools to visit a town/school in France as part of a wider curriculum project. All project materials including planning, resources and pupil work are given to the LA to disseminate to all schools. We currently have materials to support visits to Boulogne, Lens and Montreuil available for use by schools.

International school linking

Schools can request links to support languages in KS2 and as part of the Our Medway 2012 project. Schools in the project are expected to link with their allocated country in some way as part of the curriculum offer. The council works closely with the British Council to find suitable links for schools.
