Applying for a school place in Medway?

Please check the information below first to see which application processes are currently open. Do it quickly, do it efficiently, do it online

Information about choosing a school in Medway

If you are a Medway resident (i.e. pay your Council Tax to Medway), then you must apply through Medway Council. If you live outside Medway you will need to contact your home local authority (LA) (such as Kent County Council). The Student Services Department is happy to offer you advice on how to apply for school places for your child and any further information you require.

Things to consider when choosing a school

Families can face difficult decisions when looking to choose schools for their children. You may need to consider a number of different questions, including:

  • How close is the school to the child's home or where is it located?
  • How big/small is the school?
  • What are the values and beliefs of the school?

You can contact schools to arrange an appointment to visit. You can also gather further information by looking at:

  • the school prospectus and website, which will have detailed information on the school;
  • school performance information, which is available in the achievement and attainment tables compiled by Medway Council;
  • details of recent school inspections can be obtained from the school or by using the Ofsted website

In-Year (Casual) admissions

A Casual ‘In Year’ Admission can be for a new applicant who is moving to Medway, a child being  educated at home and wishing to return to school or an existing resident attending a school who wishes to change schools. Applications can be considered for all year groups (from Year R to Year 11) during the academic year and outside of the normal transfer process for Year R, Year 3 and Year 7.

All casual applications and school offers must be made through the home LA. Please ensure that you apply to your home LA regardless of the location of the school you want to apply for.

If you name a Medway grammar school on your application, Student Services will arrange for your child to be assessed to determine if they are suitable for a grammar school education. This will normally be in the form of a test, but if your child has previously sat the Medway Test, we will seek for academic work to be reviewed. Please contact the Student Services (Admissions) Team for further advice

For further information and an application form please contact Medway Council's Student Services Operations Team on 01634 331155.
