Primary admissions 2013

All primary schools aim to offer a broad education suited to the age and ability of each child and in line with the National Curriculum.

Primary education covers the age range of four to 11 years and is provided at the following:

  • infant schools that take pupils aged four to seven years old;
  • junior schools that take pupils aged seven to 11 years old;
  • Primary schools that take pupils aged four to 11 years old.

To assist parents in understanding the admissions process Medway Council produces an information booklet which also contains details of each of the primary, infant and junior schools and information on how to make your school application.

You will be able to get a copy from any Medway primary, infant or junior school or  from Student Services (Admissions) Team.

The current 2012 admissions booklet is available here and will be replaced with the 2013 admissions booklet as soon as it is published.

Reception class: entry to infant and primary schools

This is the year in which your child reaches compulsory school age. Children who were born between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009 should start at primary or infant school in a reception class in the academic year beginning September 2013.

If you are offered a place for your child to start at any school in September 2013, you may defer that place if you wish and we suggest you discuss this with the school direct. Likewise, if the school advises you that they will start your child part time, you have the right to request for them to start your child on a full time basis. Again we suggest you discuss this with the school direct.

When listing schools on the application, you are advised to check with the head teacher whether the school has been able to admit all applicants in the past. If you are applying for a school which is not the nearest and the school has been over-subscribed in the past, you would be wise to name other schools as well on your application.

If your child has a birthday that falls during Terms 5 and 6 (1 April - 31 August) you can opt to miss the reception year entirely and instead ask for a place in the Year 1 group at the start of Term 1 in 2014. This will be treated as an In-Year (casual) admission. However, a place cannot be guaranteed for your child and may be offered to another child should the school be over-subscribed.

Year 3 entry to junior schools only

If your child is in an infant school (a school for four to seven-year-olds) at the end of Year 2 (the end of Key Stage 1), they should transfer to a junior school. Most Medway infant schools are paired with a junior school. This means that your child will have priority for a place in a particular junior school, although you can opt for another junior school. An offer of a place at an alternative junior school will be dependent upon the places available.

The children affected this year will be those with a birthday between 1 September 2005 and 31 August 2006. Transfer will be at the start of the Term 1 in 2012. You will still need to complete an application and return it to your child’s current infant school.

Please note that you cannot name primary schools on this application, it is for junior schools only. If you wish to pursue a place at a primary for your Year 2 child, you will need to complete an In-Year (casual) admission application and it will be considered for a place immediately. If a place can be offered it will be for immediate start, it cannot be deferred until September 2013.

Details of the Medway Council co-ordinated admissions schemes for primary admissions in September 2013 and the admission arrangements for all Medway schools and academies can be found on the 2013 admissions arrangements page.
