Information and communications technology in schools
Medway Council is committed to the use of Information
Communication and Technology (ICT) to help all school aged learners
to develop their roles in the community and in educational and
business life.
Across Medway schools, a network has been developed known as the
Medway Grid for Learning (MGfL) (www.medway.org.uk/mgfl.asp).
This links firstly to the South East Grid for Learning (SEGfL)
(www.segfl.org.uk/) and then to a
National Education Network (NEN). It is the availability of this
access to the NEN, alongside the development of digital content,
which is a key feature in the further development of even higher
quality of learning and teaching.
With the increase of bandwidth and improved access, instant
communication, using a wide range of technologies, remains very
attractive to children and young people. Access to such
technologies is fundamental to learning and the exchange of ideas
and beliefs in this way is vital to the development of each young
person's involvement in their own learning.
As young people mature, so their opinions are formed. Access to
websites and email facilities, as part of a whole school programme,
enables them to explore and discuss current issues in a planned and
supported environment. A core aspect of using the internet to
communicate is to enable users to develop their powers of
discrimination and the effectiveness of their communication skills.
This will provide pupils and students with the essential tools for
accessing and using the positive aspects of the internet
intelligently, while being able to discard that which they find
inappropriate. Medway Council works with schools to develop policy
and guidance to support the use of ICT in schools.
