Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (AD-HD) policy

The Educational Psychology Service has produced a policy framework and guidelines for professional practice, which are summarised below.

The policy framework is divided into three sections:

  • Introduction, which covers a description of AD/HD and its core features, when AD/HD constitutes a special educational need and how AD/HD is identified.
  • Expectations, which describes how the council and schools act together to support all pupils with special educational needs, including AD/HD.
  • Ensuring and promoting quality, which explains how individual pupils with AD/HD are discussed and monitored and that the council aims to promote the highest standards in terms of enabling children to achieve.

Guidelines are then given on:

  • teaching students with AD/HD;
  • the use of medication for children diagnosed as having AD/HD;
  • creating a successful partnership between parents and schools in the management of children in school who have been diagnosed as having AD/HD.

Finally, examples of a letter and a form from the health service are given to show the information that is likely to be requested from schools when a child is referred for attention or behaviour difficulties.

You can download the AD/HD policy (pdf 171KB). To use this file you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer please use our advice page.
