Detached youth work

What is detached youth work?

Detached youth work is not a service that attempts to get young people off the streets. It works with young people in their own territory, such as parks, shopping centres, arcades, estates and streets. It also involves working with young people on their own ideas, interests, needs and wishes.

What the Detached Youth Team does

Over time, the Detached Youth Team attempts to establish relationships with young people and their communities. Where appropriate, it develops informal education projects that address young people’s needs. The team works with communities to build partnerships with other agencies and to promote positive learning outcomes. It aims to involve young people actively in their communities, promoting learning, broadening horizons and building self-esteem.

Activities

Helps young people organise activities outside their local area, such as climbing, canoeing and bowling

Information

Provides information, advice and support, so young people can make informed decisions.

Issues

Supports young people in getting their voice heard on issues that affect them.

Services

Raises young people’s awareness of the services available to them.

How the team works

The team aims to work with young people who are not using other youth provision to:

  • identify the needs of individuals and groups;
  • initiate projects to meet these needs;
  • give information on issues that affect young people;

help young people access other services, such as advice on careers, drug misuse and health.

When is it around?

It works three nights a week, usually on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30pm.

Equal opportunities

Medway Council has an equal opportunities policy. This means it aims to make its services available to everybody. You can help by respecting the needs and differences of all the other people who use the team's premises.

Unacceptable behaviour

Persistent unacceptable behaviour can do many things. It can upset, offend or spoil things for others. It can even put others in danger. Therefore, the team has a policy to help control unacceptable behaviour and can suspend members from its premises. Young people are asked to complete a membership record and will need to sign and conform to the code of conduct for the premises. Personal information like gender, ethnicity, name and contact details is taken in strict confidence and will not be used outside the premises. For more details about the policies please ask staff in the team.
