Dealing with stray dogs

Medway Community Officers collect stray dogs between 5.30am and 9pm, seven days a week. Outside these hours, stray dogs may be taken to the local police station.

If a dog is seized by the Community Officers, they will attempt to return it to the owner, for which there is a statutory charge.

If the owner cannot be identified or contacted, the dog will be held at the council's kennels until the owner pays a statutory charge and kennelling fees. If the dog is not claimed after seven days, it is normally found a new owner but if it cannot be re-homed it may be destroyed Medway Council's kennel service is provided by Jasmil Kennels and Cattery Ltd.

Community Officers will attempt to return dogs to their owners on the first occasion.  On subsequent occasions, it will be taken to the kennels as a matter of course, and the owner will be notified.

The law states that all dogs must wear a collar and tag with the owner's name and address (including dogs fitted with microchips).A day for every dog
