Dealing with stray dogs
Medway
Community Officers collect stray dogs between 5.30am and 9pm,
seven days a week. Outside these hours, stray dogs may be
taken to the local police station.
If a dog is seized by the Community Officers, they will
attempt to return it to the owner, for which there is a statutory
charge.
If the owner cannot be identified or contacted, the
dog will be held at the council's kennels until the owner pays
a statutory charge and kennelling fees. If the dog is not
claimed after seven days, it is normally found a new owner but if
it cannot be re-homed it may be destroyed Medway Council's
kennel service is provided by Jasmil Kennels and Cattery
Ltd.
Community Officers will attempt to return dogs to their owners
on the first occasion. On subsequent occasions, it will be
taken to the kennels as a matter of course, and the owner will be
notified.
The law states that all dogs must wear a collar and tag
with the owner's name and address (including dogs fitted with

Dangerous dogs
The police and the community officers share the
responsibility for dealing with dangerous dogs, with the police
being the lead agency in prosecuting offenders.
