Core Strategy

The Core Strategy is the main strategic policy document of the LDF. It sets out the vision for the area over the next 15 years and policies intended to enable this to be realised. The diagram below shows the stages involved in the production and adoption of the document, highlighting the stage it is currently at.

The council has now reached the Submission Draft stage of the Core Strategy. The draft plan was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate on Tuesday, 7 February 2012. This was a month in advance of the date programmed in the Local Development Scheme. Laura Graham, BSc, MA, MRTPI, has been appointed to conduct the examination to determine if the draft Core Strategy is sound.

The Inspector has confirmed the timetable and process for the Examination hearings. The hearings will commence on Tuesday, 12 June 2012 at Medway Council’s offices at Gun Wharf in Chatham. A detailed programme for the four days of the Examination Hearings is attached below. For all queries regarding the Examination hearings, please email the LDF Programme Officer, Alison Rock, at  ldfprogrammeofficer@medway.gov.uk or phone on 01634 333880.

Copies of the notice and programme of the examination hearings, guidance notes for participants, and a list of matters and issues selected by the Inspector for examination are attached below.

The process was started back in 2008 when a series of State of Medway Reports and a Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report were published. These set out baseline information about the area and started to identify the issues that needed to be addressed.

This was followed in July 2009 by an Issues and Options Report and associated Initial Sustainability Appraisal. The Pre-Publication Draft Core Strategy and the Interim Appraisal were produced for public consultation in late 2010.

The council used information gathered from the representations made at this stage to inform the Publication Draft Core Strategy that was subject to consultation in August 2011. This was the final stage for comments before the preparation of the Submission Draft.
