Medway Core Strategy

The Core Strategy is the main strategic policy document of the Local Development Framework (LDF). It sets out the vision for the area over the next 15 years and the policies intended to enable this to be realised. The diagram below shows the stages involved in the production and adoption of the document, highlighting the the current stage.

In January 2012, the council approved a Submission Draft of the Core Strategy. This document was sent to the Planning Inspectorate for independent examination. Laura Graham, BSc, MA, MRTPI, was appointed to conduct the examination to determine if the draft Core Strategy is sound.

The inspector held hearing sessions into the matters and issues that she had selected for examination in June 2012. She requested additional information following the hearings, and will issue further advice on proceedings and the timetable to be followed once she has considered the information submitted.

All documents related to the Examination hearings can be found on the Core Strategy Examination 2012 - 2013 page.

In response to new information that emerged during the Examination process on nightingales at Lodge Hill, the Council has carried out a review of the Sustainability Appraisal that assessed the draft Core Strategy. A draft Addendum to the Sustainability Appraisal/Strategic Environmental Assessment report was produced. The council consulted on this draft addendum report in early 2013. A final SA Addendum report (pdf 1,124KB) is now available.

The process was started back in 2008 when a series of State of Medway Reports and a Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report were published. These set out baseline information about the area and started to identify the issues that needed to be addressed.

This was followed in July 2009 by an Issues and Options Report and associated Initial Sustainability Appraisal. The Pre-Publication Draft Core Strategy and the Interim Appraisal were produced for public consultation in late 2010.

The council used information gathered from the representations made at this stage to inform the Publication Draft Core Strategy that was subject to consultation in August 2011. This was the final stage for comments before the preparation of the Submission Draft.
