Five parks were judged in May 2013 and we are pleased to
announce that all five were awarded the Green Flag Award
for 2013/14, they were:
Winners were judged on eight criteria, including
safety, maintenance and community involvement.
In addition to these sites, for 2014 the Great Lines Heritage
Park and Gillingham Park will be entered.

Play area improvements
Works have recently been completed on improved play provision at
Hoo Leisure Centre, Priestfields, Gillingham Green (Grange Road),
and Cliffe Woods. In addition to these a play sculpture trail
has been opened in Gillingham Park and a SportActive system at
Ryetop playing fields off Beacon Close in Rainham.Proposals
are currently being worked on for improvements to the kick-about
area at Maidstone Road Sports Ground and refurbishment of play
space at Brompton Recreation Ground. Medway Council capital
funding was announced in September 2013 for investment in
improved access to, and play provision, within the play area at

horticultural improvements have been undertaken with creation of a
winter garden and installation of a pergola with climbers.

Borstal Open Space
Following discussion with Borstal Open Spaces Society (BOSS) a
grant has been received from Veolia Environmental Trust. This
funding, together with other capital resource will be used over
coming months to improve site interpretation, access and site
boundaries. Through undertaking a series of ecological
studies, future investment in the site will be planned following
this initial phase.
Kent Gardens Trust
The Greenspace Development Team has started a project with the
Kent Gardens Trust to undertake archive research into historic
parks and gardens in Medway to highlight their significance and
help inform future policy for protection and enhancement.
Beechings Way Pavilion
Construction works on a new pavilion (as an
extension to the community centre) at Beechings Way commenced in
late September. These works are programmed to last 32 weeks
