Green Flag
Five parks were judged in May 2012 and we are pleased to
announce that all five were awarded the Green Flag Award
for 2012/13, they were:
Winners were judged on eight criteria including
safety, maintenance and community involvement.

Play area improvements
An order will shortly be placed for works to improve the play
areas at Hamilton Road, Rookery Fields, Ballens Road, Cobham Rise
and Cozenton Park. Money has also recently been secured for
improvement to the play area on Ryetop playing field in
Rainham.
Outdoor gym
Following the successful implementation of an outdoor gym for
adults in Rainham Recreation Grounds, a further £75,000, has been
invested to develop additional facilities. New facilities are now
open at The Esplanade, Canal Road and Maidstone Road Sports
Ground.
Gillingham Park
A phased programme of improvements to Gillingham Park off
Canterbury Street in Gillingham is continuing. Formal bedding,
footpath, seats and benches have received investment together with
new entrance gates being installed at Canterbury Street to better
reflect the historic layout. During 2012 further investment in
planting schemes and site interpretation will take place together
with creation of a play trail.
Borstal Open Space
Following discussion with Borstal Open Spaces Society (BOSS) a
master plan for the future of Borstal Open Space is presently being
developed. Planning permission has now been granted for the
temporary pavilion to remain on site for a further five years to
allow time for funding to be secured for long-term development of
the site.
Grange Road
Path resurfacing works have now been completed on the
site. Following public consultation, a timetable is being
drawn up to undertake improvements to play provision, access,
interpretation and seating on site.
Great Lines Heritage Park
Following a £2million grant from the government's Parklands fund
in 2008, work is now complete to upgrade infrastructure
and the linking of the Great Lines Heritage Park. A
five-year Great Lines
Heritage Park Management and Maintenance plan (pdf 9,795KB) has
now been adopted to ensure good management of the site.
