Recreation grounds and sports facilities

Medway Council is continually working to secure funding to improve outdoor sport facilities. It is also currently assessing the current and future demand for sports facilities and will be establishing where there is a need for new facilities such as the new mountain bike track at Capstone Farm Country Park.

Further information on each of the activities and fees and charges that apply can be found below.

Bowls

The following locations provide outdoor bowling facilities:

  • Jacksons Recreation Ground, Rochester (pay to play);
  • Darnley Road, Strood (pay to play);
  • APCM Recreation Ground, Cliffe (private club);
  • Maidstone Road Sports Ground, Chatham (private club).

Charges

  • Adults - £2.90 per hour.
  • Junior and 60-plus - £1.90 per hour.


Cricket

Medway has two cricket pitches available to hire at:

  • APCM Recreation Ground, Cliffe;
  • Luton Recreation Ground, Chatham.

These may be hired from 10am-6pm for £70 per game and the cost includes the hire of the pavilions.

Football

Adult and junior pitches are provided throughout Medway.

There are block-booking agreements in place with the following leagues:

  • Rochester and District Football League;
  • Medway Messenger Sunday Football League;
  • Medway News Youth League.

If you are a member of one of these leagues and you wish to book a pitch, you need to contact the appropriate league secretary who will also be able to provide details of charges. Pitches may also be hired for individual games, subject to availability. Charges will be dependant on whether the pitch is adult or junior and if there is a pavilion on site. Junior pitches

  • Hook Meadow, Walderslade
  • Kingsfrith playing field, Hempstead
  • Luton Recreation ground, Luton

Rugby

There are two sites with facilities for playing rugby at:

  • Watling Street, home to Gillingham Anchorians Rugby Club;
  • Priestfield Recreation Ground, home to Medway Rugby Club.

Tennis

There are tennis courts throughout Medway.

Three all-weather courts can be found at Deangate Ridge. These courts are free and no booking is required.

The four courts listed below are open from 10am until 30 minutes before dusk or 9pm, whichever is soonest.

Maidstone Road Sports Ground

Maidstone Road has four hard courts and five grass courts. These courts are free and no booking is required.

Jacksons Recreation Ground

Jacksons has four hard courts and is a pay and play facility. Courts cost £3.70 per hour per adult; £2.10 per hour for a child or senior citizen. To book, phone 01634 847739.

Darnley Road

Darnley Road has two hard courts and is a pay and play facility. Courts cost £3.70 per hour per adult; £2.10 per hour for a child or senior citizen. To book, phone 01634 718959.

Wigmore Park

Wigmore Park has two hard courts. These courts are free and no booking is required.

Pitch and putt

Snodhurst Bottom

This challenging 18-hole pitch and putt course run by Greenspace Services is located at Snodhurst Bottom, off Walderslade Road. The course is open from 1 April to 11 October. The opening tines are 12noon Monday to Friday and from 9am Saturday and Sunday. The course opens from 9am in the main summer holiday and closes daily at dusk.

Gillingham Golf Club

Gillingham Golf club is a flat parkland 18-hole course 5,260 yards in length.

Deangate Ridge Golf Course

Deangate Ridge Golf Course is a wooded 18-hole municipal course 6,300 yards in length with an 18-hole pitch and putt course and an 11-bay driving range.
