Medway Town and Gown 10km run
All runners great and small will take to the streets this summer for the first-ever Medway Town and Gown 10k.
|
More than 2,000 competitors are expected to take part in the event, which has been organised by the national charity Muscular Dystrophy campaign, in association with Medway Council. The run will begin at 10am on Sunday, 21 June 2009 from the Great Lines, heading from Dock Road into the Historic Dockyard, on to St Mary’s Island and then looping back to the finish. |
|
The race will pass many of the Dockyard's historic buildings, giving runners excellent views of Chatham's rich heritage.
One week after the race these landmarks will be the backdrop for National Armed Forces Day (www.armedforcesday.org.uk/National.aspx), a day to celebrate Britain's armed forces, past and present.
Earlier this year, Chatham Historic Dockyard won the right to hold the first National Armed Forces Day on 27 June 2009.
In addition to the main race there will be a 3km young athletes race for 11 to 14-year-olds.
The Medway Town and Gown 10k is only the second in the country, joining its counterpart in Oxford, which has been run for 27 years.
The event will raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, the leading UK charity focusing on all muscle diseases.
