Rough sleepers and roofless people
When someone becomes homeless and has nowhere to stay, the
Homelessness and Housing Advice Service has to offer them support.
In some cases this may mean temporary accommodation.
However, supply is limited and the council has to give priority to certain
groups of people such as families with dependent children, pregnant
women, or vulnerable people.
There is help,
however, for people not in a priority group.
Housing Services works closely with other departmentsto help
people who not have a permanent home (sofa surfers) or who are
sleeping rough. These include:
Housing Services and its partner organisation provide
information not only on accommodation but also on training and
education (contact Employ Medway on 01634 336682),
lifestyle skills, how to find a permanent home and how to get
health care including help for people with drug and alcohol
problems.
Medway Council, in partnership with the Homelessness Forum, is
currently developing a Homelessness Directory – LINES (Locating
Individual Needs Easy Search), due to be published in January
2010.
