Housing Benefit

Housing benefit can help you pay for part or all of your rent.

Who can claim Housing Benefit?

You may get Housing Benefit if:

  • you pay rent
  • you’re on a low income or claiming benefits
  • your savings are below £16,000

You can apply if you’re unemployed or working, but if you live with a partner, only one of you can get Housing Benefit.

What you'll get

There’s no set amount of Housing Benefit and what you get will depend on your income and whether you rent privately or from a council.

How you're paid

If you pay your rent to Medway Council or mhs housing, your housing benefit will be paid into your rent account (you won't receive the money).

However, when Universal Credit is introduced for some people in Medway, housing benefit will be included in the single monthly payment and you will need to pay your rent directly to your landlord.

Your housing benefit will usually be paid from the Monday after we receive your application.
