Affordable housing standards

Medway is at the centre of the Thames Gateway, an area designated for a total of 50,000 new homes.

The aim of the council’s affordable housing planning policies is to create balanced and integrated communities and to deliver good quality, affordable housing to meet the local needs of both present and future generations.

Because the council cannot meet its affordable housing goals alone, it works closely with a wide variety of other people and organisations. The following standards apply to its work to deliver affordable housing for the people of Medway.

Medway Council will:

  • analyse the housing need of the area and develop a range of affordable housing solutions to meet those needs;
  • work with affordable housing providers and planners to maximise the amount of affordable housing provided;
  • ensure that the council’s register of affordable housing sites is kept up-to-date and maintain an up-to-date record of housing stock held by affordable housing providers in Medway;
  • consult stakeholders regularly and carry out diversity impact assessments.
