Housing in Multiple Occupation service standards
Medway Council is determined to make sure that people living in
Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) are
comfortable and safe and enjoy adequate space and facilities.
The council is responsible for licensing such premises and has
drawn up detailed standards that apply to shared houses and flats,
self-contained flats, hostels and bedsits.
There are minimum standards that HMOs need to meet within the
Medway Council area. The council will refer to these standards when
deciding how many people or households can occupy a property.
While the Housing Service Standards: HMO leaflet below is
designed to help landlords make sure they are meeting the right
standards, the council will take other factors into account when
dealing with each property.
It may decide after carrying out a risk assessment that other
measures need to be taken to ensure that the housing standards are
satisfactory for each unit of living accommodation. Alternatively
it could decide that the standards can be varied in a particular
case.
Landlords who are in any doubt as to the standards they need to
meet should get in touch with the private sector housing team by
phoning 01634 333066.
