Economic development strategy

up arrow : go up one level Business

Local authorities are required by law to have an economic development statement or strategy.

Consultation on the strategy

The Medway Economic Development Strategy for 2009-12 (pdf 278KB) was developed by specialist consultant ERS (www.ers.org.uk/). A period of public consultation, ending on Friday, 19 June 2009, led to a number of comments which were vital to help produce the final draft before official ratification by the council.

The document provides a concise and critical review of existing policy documents relating to Medway and its location within the Thames Gateway and the south-east. It also gives an assessment of overall economic and employment trends relating to Medway over the short term (2009-12) and longer term (to 2026).

Action Plan

In the course of the consultation process, an accompanying comprehensive Action Plan was produced to present a work programme of what the strategy should deliver from 2009 to 2012. This incorporates the programme of counter-recessionary measures approved by Cabinet on 14 July 2009.

The council was particularly keen to receive the views of local businesses, stakeholders and residents as to the type of actions and initiatives that will strengthen the local economy, help it grow and assist in the delivery of the final Economic Development Strategy.

It is imperative that steps are taken now to put in place the partnerships and funding sources required to develop and implement the plan while working to complete the Employment Land Study.

Latest news

At its meeting on 15 December 2009, the council's Cabinet agreed to adopt the Economic Development Strategy and gave delegated authority to the Director of Regeneration, Community and Culture, in consultation with the Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Strategic Growth, to make minor changes to the Strategy to ensure consistency with the forthcoming Employment Land Study.
