A two-year programme of major road and infrastructure improvements started in February 2009.

When completed, the work will open up key sites for redevelopment and provide Chatham with extra traffic capacity and easier journeys.

The work is paid for by central government funding and builds on the benefits brought about by the replacement of the Chatham ring-road system in 2007.

Delivering this remodelled road system is an essential element of the 20-year regeneration programme that will establish Chatham as the commercial and a transformed cultural city centre for Medway. The road improvements have the public support of leading businesses, including Arriva, Tesco and the Pentagon Shopping Centre.

Demolition of Sir John Hawkins Way flyover

The centre span of the flyover was demolished over one weekend in July 2009. Since then all of the rubble has been cleared and a temporary bus, cycle and taxi route has been constructed and is now operational adjacent to the former flyover.

A permanent route, to be called Waterfront Way, is currently under construction and on schedule to open for buses, taxis and cycles in early 2010. Once Waterfront Way is open, the temporary route will be closed to allow the reinstatement of the pedestrianised High Street. This will be followed by paving and tree-planting on the High Street.

Naming of Waterfront Way

Waterfront Way follows the route of the former Sir John Hawkins Way flyover. It was named by Medway resident Michael Sparks, who was one of more than 300 entrants in a recent road-naming competition held by Medway Council.

The scheme is expected to be completed in early 2010.

Planning application for Queen Street

An outline planning application has been prepared for new homes and shops on The Brook at the site of the current Queen Street and Slicketts Hill car parks. In November 2009, people were invited to study and comment on the proposals ahead of the submission of the planning application. The proposals draw on the ambitions of the 2008 Chatham Centre and Waterfront Development Brief.

Improvements to Union Street

Major improvements are planned for Union Street and its junctions with the A2 (New Road), Best Street, High Street and The Brook in Chatham town centre. The scheme will create improved crossing facilities and an inviting, attractive space for pedestrians at this important entrance to the town centre. The work will increase traffic capacity, straightening and widening Union Street to accommodate three lanes of traffic in both directions. Land on the west side of the new road will be landscaped.

The main construction work is planned to start in early 2010. There will be some disruption while the work takes place but the end result will be worth it, with better conditions for all road users.

Improvements to The Brook

Once the road improvements are completed, The Brook provides the opportunity to introduce a wider variety of homes into the heart of Chatham. These will provide the benefits of city living close to shops, restaurants and cultural facilities, combined with easy access to open spaces, including the Great Lines Heritage Park.

High-quality public realm and improved pedestrian crossings on The Brook are crucial to ensure that the residential quarter will be well connected to the town centre.

Go ahead for Chatham's new bus station

Plans for a new high-tech bus station for Chatham were approved by the council’s planning committee on Wednesday, 27 January.

The striking, landscaped facility will be up and running on Globe Lane by Spring 2011, replacing the uninviting 1970s-built bus station inside the Pentagon shopping centre.

It will operate using real-time travel information. Buses fitted with global positioning systems (GPS) will be tracked to provide passengers with up-to-the-minute arrival and departure times on digital display boards, backed by verbal announcements.

The next couple of years are going to be very busy in Chatham and some traffic delay and disruption will be unavoidable if the deadlines for this work are to be met.
