Regeneration was kick-started by public money. Now Medway Council is negotiating with a private sector investment partner – a company expected to generate more than £1billion of investment in Medway over the next 10 years.
Soon Chatham will start to see major physical change.
In June 2004, after extensive public consultation, the council adopted the Chatham Centre and Waterfront Development Framework. That set the overall plan for the regeneration of the area.
Now it is looking at detailed ideas for the redevelopment of three key regeneration sites:
- Chatham Waterfront;
- Station Gateway;
- The Brook.
During the public consultation of summer 2007, the council sought the views of the people of Medway on the next steps for these regeneration sites, as well as its proposals for transport and public open space. Together these form the Supplementary Planning Document.
The consultation identified a preference for the new bus station to be closer to the Pentagon shopping centre. An area outside the Pentagon was identified as a possible location.
Medway’s £1billion regeneration programme will transform Chatham as Medway’s new city centre. Plans for the Chatham Waterfront regeneration site, between Sun Pier and the Command House pub, include striking apartments, a waterfront park, cafes, restaurants and a major new arts and entertainment venue. The area around Chatham railway station will become a busy new business quarter and there are big retail and residential ambitions for The Brook.
