Chatham

Chatham lies at the heart of Medway and, as its city centre, has acquired an increasingly vital role in the economic development and prosperity of Medway.

Its most famous attraction is the Historic Dockyard, dating back more than 400 years to the age of sail. Today it is one of the world’s most important maritime heritage destinations and a prospective World Heritage Site (www.chathamworldheritage.org.uk). Close by and just 1.24 miles (2km) from the town centre is the Dockside Outlet Centre (www.docksideshopping.co.uk) - a 15,000m2 designer outlet centre at Chatham Maritime.

There is plenty more to see and do in Chatham, including a wide range of shopping, leisure facilities and buildings of great architectural importance. These include The Central and Brook Theatres, both offering a diverse mixture of cultural and family entertainment for residents and visitors.

As Medway’s premier shopping centre, Chatham has an excellent choice of brand-name stores to choose from, including Boots, Debenhams, Primark, TK Maxx, Body Shop and Woolworths. These and many more can be found in the Pentagon shopping centre (www.dunedinproperty.co.uk/documents/Chatham.pdf) and in the pedestrianised High Street.

Located in the heart of Chatham, the Pentagon shopping centre extends a warm welcome to shoppers. It has nearly 100 shops, restaurants, cafés, a bowling alley, ladies’ fitness centre and supervised play area all under one roof. The centre also has its own multi-storey car park boasting some 670 parking spaces, a bus station and is ideally situated within easy walking distance of Chatham's mainline railway station.

For the shopper, Chatham’s pedestrianised High Street offers a pleasant, traffic-free environment, complemented with closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance, providing a safe place to shop.

Town centre profile:

  • Sub-regional shopping
  • Gross floorspace 70,000m2
  • 420 units
  • Fully pedestrianised
  • 2,350 parking spaces
