Trading standards

The role of Medway Council's Trading Standards Team is to ensure that businesses compete in a fair and safe manner, ensuring benefits for both consumers and legitimate traders.

Its aim is to make sure that consumers are confident and able to make informed purchase choices. The Team offers free advice on all types of consumer issues to residents and businesses in Medway. Any person purchasing goods or services from a business in Medway can also use this service.

The Team enforces the law in the following main areas:

• fair trading;
• the safety of consumer goods;
• food standards and composition;
• sales to under-age children and young people;
• the health of farm animals;
• consumer credit;
• the storage of petrol and explosives;
• weights and measures, including the certification of public weighbridge operators.

Trading Standards also has an external website (www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/medway) which operates as part of a network of websites supported by the Trading Standards Institute. The site contains a wealth of information specific to trading standards in Medway and national information, such as product recalls and guidance leaflets for businesses and consumers.
