In January 2006, Medway Council submitted two exciting lottery funding bids that have the potential to transform Medway, supplement current regeneration and symbolise Medway’s renaissance.
The two projects, involving the public, private and voluntary sectors, have a combined value in excess of £115million and reveal plans for a new cultural quarter at Chatham Reach on the banks of the River Medway and the transformation of the Great Lines into a world-class city park.
The bids were intended to be complementary but each was designed to work independently if the other was not successful.
Living Landmarks is one of the Big Lottery Fund’s grant programmes and has two streams - one for projects costing between £10million and £25million and another for those costing between £25million and £50million.
Under the larger programme called Living Landmarks: The People’s Millions, the Big Lottery Fund will award the funding to a single project of national or regional significance, the winner being decided by a televised national public vote.
Unfortunately, the Big Lottery Fund did not shortlist either project, saying that there was strong competition from many organisations across the country for what is a limited pot of money.
Medway Council announced immediately that it is not the end of the road for these exciting schemes. Follow the link above for more information on the Great Lines City Park, or visit www.chathamworldheritage.co.uk.
