Big Lottery Fund - Living Landmarks

up arrow : go up one level Great Lines City Park
What is the Big Lottery's Living Landmarks Programme?

The Big Lottery Fund launched Living Landmarks, a UK-wide programme to encourage communities to work together to improve their quality of life and their environment through major capital projects.

There was no guarantee of success. The Great Lines City Park made considerable progress, alongside many other applications across the UK. Despite missing out at the shortlisting stage in August 2006, Medway Council is continuing with the project and needs community involvement, with your invaluable input, at every stage.

The story so far...

  • January 2006 - Medway Council applied to the Living Landmarks Programme for £25million for the Great Lines City Park. This was to cover 75 per cent of the overall project costs with the remaining 25 per cent coming from other funding sources and partner contributions.
  • February 2006 - the project came through the first round of the programme and joined the long-list of 76 projects across the country, chosen from 350 applications.

  • April 2006 - a team from the Big Lottery Fund visited Medway to assess the bid. During their two-day visit, the assessors spoke to the team behind the bid, viewed presentations and toured the site. The project was then considered for short-listing in August.
  • June and July 2006 - Big Lottery Fund assessors made more visits to help decide which projects would be on the short-list of 20 bids. In the meantime the following tasks continued:
    • carrying out further consultation and engagement;
    • developing masterplans;
    • drawing up technical and risk assessments;
    • securing partners with match funding;
    • developing a robust financial profile and business plan for the area.
  • August 2006 - the short-list was announced and although it the bid had not been successful, Medway Council immediately confirmed that the scheme would continue, and they were committed to securing funds from other sources..
