The terminal is at the eastern end of the Hoo Peninsula, between the Medway and the Thames. It occupies an area of about 78 hectares with the immediate surroundings being the River Medway to the south, a creek and marsh lands in the Medway’s inter-tidal zone to the west, and industrial and port developments to the north and east. The nearest residential populations are over 1.24 miles (2km) kilometres away. The A228/B2001 road between Stoke and Grain villages and a railway pass by the terminal. The terminal is operated by BP Oil UK Ltd on behalf of BP Logistics. It unloads jet fuel (aviation turbine kerosene) form ships and stores it. The jet fuel is subsequently pumped into a cross-country pipeline. Very occasionally, there are deliveries of gas-oil and this is also stored.

Under the Control of Major Accidents Hazard (COMAH) 1999 Regulations the site operator (BP Oil UK Ltd) is required to provide information to people within a defined area, who may be affected by a major accident at the site. This area is determined by the competent authority and is referred to as the public information zone (PIZ).
The limit of the hazard area, as defined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), does not include any residential premises within the the Public Information Zone (PIZ). The Grain LNG Storage, Thamesport (London) Ltd and Maritime House industrial sites are within the PIZ and BP Oil Uk Ltd provides information to them on the actions to take in the event of an emergency on the BP Oil UK Ltd site.
