The terminal is at the eastern end of the Hoo Peninsula, between the Medway and the Thames. It occupies an area of about 78 hectares with the immediate surroundings being the River Medway to the south, a creek and marsh lands in the Medway’s inter-tidal zone to the west, and industrial and port developments to the north and east. Under the Control of Major Accidents Hazard (COMAH) 1999 Regulations the site operator (BP Oil UK Ltd) is required to provide information to people within a defined area, who may be affected by a major accident at the site. This area is determined by the competent authority and is referred to as the public information zone (PIZ).

The limit of the hazard area, as defined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), does not include any residential premises within the the Public Information Zone (PIZ). The Grain LNG Storage, Thamesport (London) Ltd and Maritime House industrial sites are within the PIZ and BP Oil Uk Ltd provides information to them on the actions to take in the event of an emergency on the BP Oil UK Ltd site.

An abridged version of the BP Oil off-site COMAH Plan (pdf 99KB) is available to download. To use this file, you will need Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer, please use our advice page.
