Southern Gas Networks Plc

The Gillingham Gas Holder facility is situated in Gillingham south bank of the river Medway and on the north side of Pier Road. This road forms part of a major traffic route through Medway on the A289.

Generally, the land around the site slopes downward towards the river Medway. There has been a gas storage facility on this site for the best part of the last 100 years and is very close to a residential area and a petrol station.

To the north of the site is Gillingham Marina and to the east is the Strand Leisure Park. The area is also crossed by a number of residential roads and a railway passes over the western end of Pier Road but is used on an infrequent basis.

The limit of the hazard area, as defined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), is 200 metres from the site perimeter. In the event of a fire, local residents and those working in the Public Information Zone (PIZ) are to shelter indoors from the heat and await further instructions. All those properties within the PIZ have been sent a letter detailing this advice. In general, messages will be given to the public via the media.

An abridged version of the Southern Gas Network COMAH Plan (pdf 182KB) is available to be downloaded. To use this file, you will need Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer, please use our advice page.
